Taking Useful Notes During a Wildfire Property Walk

Capture location-specific observations without turning a walkthrough into an unsupported technical assessment.

Choose a consistent reference

Start with a simple property sketch and label buildings and landscape areas. During the walk, use those labels in notes and photographs. Record what you can observe directly, such as stored materials or a blocked entrance, and separate it from questions that need a qualified reviewer.

Keep uncertainties visible

Use “not inspected” for inaccessible areas and “identity unknown” for products or materials you cannot verify. Do not fill gaps with assumptions. Ask the person leading the walk to explain recommendations in terms of the location, intended work and provider needed. Make a note when an issue lies outside their scope.

Turn notes into a follow-up

After the visit, send a short summary of open questions to the appropriate parties. For WTG, include the vegetation areas under consideration and any access or preparation concerns. Store the original observations with the dated responses. This creates a useful history without presenting an informal walk as a certification of the property.
