Why WTG uses Komodo

Komodo Fire Retardant for Professional Wildfire Pretreatment

See why WTG uses Komodo for planned vegetation pretreatment, what its Forest Service qualification means, and which limits belong in your quote.

Why Komodo fits WTG’s defined service

Wildfire Treatment Group uses Komodo for one defined purpose: planned professional ground application to suitable vegetation and ground fuels. We evaluate the property, identify proposed treatment areas and exclusions, apply the specified product under the applicable instructions, and document the completed scope. WTG does not sell this work as emergency response, an installed sprinkler system or a coating for every exterior surface.

The product choice matters, but it is not the whole property plan. Komodo pretreatment should be considered after priority vegetation work is understood and alongside defensible space, structure hardening, maintenance and evacuation planning. See how pretreatment fits into wildfire mitigation.

What long-term fire retardant means

The U.S. Forest Service defines long-term retardants as salt-containing products that decrease fire intensity and slow the advance of fire even after the water they contain evaporates. “Long-term” describes that chemical action after drying; it does not mean permanent, maintenance-free or guaranteed for an entire season.

WTG uses that narrower meaning when discussing performance. A planned application can add a layer to suitable treated fuels, but it cannot guarantee that a home, road, landscape or other asset will survive a wildfire. Review the professional application scope.

Read the Forest Service listing precisely

The Forest Service Qualified Products List dated September 15, 2025 includes “Komodo” in the long-term-retardant category for pretreatment and ground application. The list marks the product fully qualified under Forest Service Specification 5100-304d for the listed use and states that qualified products are approved only at the specified mix ratio and with the indicated application equipment.

The same page labels this use “Pretreatment, Non Storable,” states that the pretreatment category was not evaluated for durability and weathering, and assigns Komodo note 3: the product is to be delivered premixed and ready to use, with no mixing after purchase. WTG verifies the applicable product documentation for a proposed job rather than treating a brand name as permission to use any formulation in any way.

What the qualification does not establish

A Qualified Products List entry is evidence about the listed product and conditions. It does not certify WTG, approve every Komodo product or package, set a universal reapplication interval, establish compliance with local vegetation rules, or predict how a specific property will perform during a wildfire. The Forest Service also directs users to consult individual agencies for their own policies.

This is why a proposal should identify the product, intended use, treatment areas and exclusions instead of relying on a broad “approved” claim. If another provider cites a test or certification, ask whether it applies to the exact formulation and application being proposed. Use these questions when comparing treatment proposals.

Separate manufacturer statements from agency qualification

Komodo’s current manufacturer FAQ says the product is water soluble, may leave a chalky white residue and can lose efficacy with repeated sprinkler or irrigation saturation. The FAQ also makes broader claims about rainfall resistance, material compatibility, plant use and environmental characteristics. Those are manufacturer statements; they are not additional findings in the September 15, 2025 Forest Service pretreatment listing.

WTG does not convert a manufacturer’s general statement into a fixed protection period or a blanket promise for every property. Irrigation, weather exposure, new growth, mowing, disturbance and changed landscaping belong in the property-specific inspection and follow-up discussion. Learn what can change after application.

Confirm suitable vegetation and important exclusions

A Komodo inquiry does not make every part of a parcel an application area. WTG reviews the vegetation and ground fuels you want considered along with access, slopes, irrigation, water features, animal-use areas, finished surfaces, neighboring land and planned landscape work. The written proposal should distinguish included areas from exclusions and identify any preparation you are responsible for completing.

WTG’s core service is vegetation pretreatment. Roofs, siding, decks, equipment and other finished surfaces are not automatically included, even if a manufacturer discusses other possible uses. See what WTG evaluates for treatment.

Use the exact instructions and Safety Data Sheet

Product identity and intended use determine which instructions and Safety Data Sheet apply. Before application, WTG reviews the current documents for the product being proposed and plans around relevant handling, access and site conditions. Owners should disclose ponds, streams, wells, irrigation, pets, livestock, feed areas and other sensitive uses during the assessment.

WTG does not describe any treatment as harmless in every setting. A general web page cannot replace the current product documents, the agreed application plan or any applicable agency requirements. Questions about a specific area should be resolved before it is included in the scope.

Request a Komodo pretreatment proposal

Send WTG the property address, property type and the vegetation or buildings you want considered. Mention planned mowing or clearing, water features, irrigation, animals, access limits and any existing mitigation recommendations. WTG will review suitability, travel and scheduling before confirming a project.

Request a property-specific Komodo application quote. Your proposal should let you see the product and intended use, treatment boundaries, exclusions, preparation, price and follow-up expectations before you decide.

Questions about this service

Is Komodo “Forest Service approved”?

The September 15, 2025 Forest Service Qualified Products List includes “Komodo” as fully qualified under Specification 5100-304d for the listed pretreatment and ground-application conditions. That status applies to the listed product and conditions; it is not a blanket approval of every formulation, use or contractor.

How long does Komodo treatment last?

WTG does not promise a universal duration. The Forest Service listing says the pretreatment category was not evaluated for durability and weathering. Current product instructions, irrigation, weather exposure, disturbance and vegetation change should inform inspection and any reapplication decision.

Does WTG apply Komodo to houses and decks?

WTG’s core service is planned ground application to suitable vegetation and fuels. Buildings, roofs, decks and other finished surfaces are not automatically included. The proposal must identify the actual application areas.

Is Komodo safe around pets, plants and water?

Do not rely on a blanket safety statement. Tell WTG about animals, vegetation, ponds, streams, wells, irrigation and site use so the exact product instructions, Safety Data Sheet and appropriate exclusions can be reviewed before work is proposed.

Can I apply Komodo myself?

Komodo sells consumer products, but a DIY package is different from WTG’s assessed, mapped and documented professional service. Compare the exact product, instructions, equipment, site conditions, treatment footprint and responsibility for follow-up before choosing.
