Wildfire Hazard and Risk: Reading the Terms Carefully

Understand why different wildfire reports may describe different parts of the same property question.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Identify what is being measured

Wildfire Risk to Communities distinguishes hazard, including likelihood and intensity, from vulnerability, including exposure and susceptibility. Those terms answer different questions. Before comparing two reports, find the definitions each publisher uses and whether the result describes a community, a modeled location or an inspected building.

Avoid a false comparison

An illustrative example: a regional map and a contractor’s building inspection may both be useful without sharing a comparable score. Put the reports side by side and list their scope, date and limitations. Ask the authors about an apparent conflict rather than averaging the numbers or treating one as a correction of the other.

Bring the relevant findings

For a WTG inquiry, share the parts concerning vegetation and project access, plus any work another adviser recommends completing first. A treatment quote should explain the proposed work, not promise a numerical reduction in a regional risk score. Keep technical questions with the source qualified to answer them and track practical follow-up separately.
