Firewise USA Recognition and Private Treatment: How They Differ

Understand community recognition before assuming a single contractor project confers Firewise status.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Use the program’s terminology

NFPA describes Firewise USA as a community recognition program. Its process includes organizing residents, assessing community conditions, planning actions and reporting participation. A single property service does not automatically make a community a recognized Firewise USA site.

Start with the community contact

Ask the resident leader or state liaison about the current process and the community’s action plan. Identify the role a proposed project would play and what records the program requests. Avoid describing a contractor as issuing Firewise certification or assuming every expense counts toward program participation.

Keep the application record specific

WTG can discuss suitable vegetation work within a private proposal. If the community considers that work relevant to its plan, confirm any program treatment of it with the responsible program contact. The WTG record documents the agreed application; it does not establish community recognition, insurance benefits or completion of unrelated mitigation tasks.
