Vacant Lots Within a Community: Defining Who Can Authorize Work

Clarify ownership and project boundaries before including undeveloped land in coordinated treatment.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Do not treat vacant as unowned

Identify the owner or authorized representative of each lot. Association interest in a parcel does not by itself establish authority to approve work there. Ask the appropriate parties to clarify permissions and any relevant restrictions before requesting a scope that crosses property lines.

Describe future land use

Explain whether construction, clearing or sale is expected and which vegetation will remain. A project organized around present conditions may make little sense if the ground will soon be substantially changed. Keep proposed work distinct from future development plans that have not been confirmed.

Keep each parcel identifiable

WTG can review suitable vegetation on authorized areas, with availability and logistics confirmed individually. Use parcel labels and clear exclusions in coordinated proposals. Completion on one lot should not imply completion on neighboring land. Preserve separate approvals and tell the provider if ownership or access changes before the scheduled work.
