Siding and Ground Clearance: Questions for a Wildfire Review

Document the building-to-ground interface before landscape or siding changes obscure it.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Make the interface visible

CSFS calls for vertical clearance between ground and home siding. Ask your building contractor to assess the current detail and appropriate corrective work. Photographs should show the wall base, adjacent ground and any landscape material that makes the transition difficult to see.

Coordinate two trades

Siding and landscaping projects can affect the same narrow area. Before work begins, agree who establishes the final ground level and who checks the finished wall detail. Keep drainage questions with an appropriate professional. A landscape drawing that looks tidy from above may not show the vertical relationship the building contractor needs to evaluate.

Keep the application boundary clear

Show WTG the finished condition and identify surfaces excluded from treatment. A vegetation application is not a siding repair or a construction compliance review. If landscaping is still moving, discuss whether the treatment scope should wait for final conditions. This avoids quoting against an area that will be excavated, covered or rebuilt immediately afterward.
