Wildfire planning for pinyon-juniper properties

Explore a property-specific approach to pinyon-juniper woodland, with coordinated forestry work and clearly defined pretreatment areas.

A woodland suited to dry country

Pinyon-juniper woodlands are part of the landscape across dry areas of Colorado and the broader Southwest. The Colorado State Forest Service describes these trees as adapted to limited rainfall and challenging conditions. Around a home, understanding the woodland’s arrangement is more useful than assuming its drought tolerance tells you how the property will perform in wildfire.

Review groups of trees and the spaces between

Show the relationship between tree groups, surrounding shrubs, grassy openings and buildings. Include both maintained areas and the natural edge in your photos. WTG can discuss whether selected suitable fuels fit a planned application, while a local forestry professional can advise on tree density and woodland management. These decisions should support one another.

Coordinate any cutting before scheduling

Pinyon-juniper management requires attention to local conditions and tree health. Share existing forestry recommendations and the timing of proposed work rather than applying a general pruning rule. If trees or brush will be removed, agree on debris handling and the finished condition before finalizing an application area. A changing site can change the scope.

Keep sensitive features visible in the plan

Identify washes, water features, gardens and conservation areas near the locations you want reviewed. Mark property boundaries and vehicle access as well. These details help define exclusions and practical access; they should not be left for an application crew to discover after arrival. Product suitability must be confirmed for the proposed use.

Ask for a focused proposal

A useful WTG proposal describes specific locations, preparation, application work and price. You can then compare that scope with your wider property priorities. Request a quote with an address and photos of the woodland edge, and tell us what you hope to accomplish. The conversation can begin without a commitment to treating the whole parcel.
