Ornamental Grasses: Questions for Wildfire Landscape Planning

Identify plantings, maintenance responsibilities and proposed changes before a treatment review.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Describe the planting clearly

Ornamental grasses may be part of a designed garden rather than an unmanaged field. Identify the plants if known, their location and how the beds are maintained. Ask a landscape professional familiar with local wildfire guidance to review the design. Do not infer suitability for retention or treatment from the word ornamental.

Coordinate seasonal work

Tell the reviewer when the garden is cut back, divided or replanted. Ask who removes cut material and how changes will be recorded. If a contractor maintains several similar beds, label them on a sketch so an instruction for one location is not applied to all of them. Include irrigation differences where relevant.

Give WTG the finished condition

A pretreatment review should reflect the vegetation expected at application, not the appearance before substantial garden work. Share the maintenance plan and note any sensitive or excluded plantings. Product instructions and site review determine the proposed scope. Avoid assuming every decorative plant can be sprayed or that new growth is covered by an earlier application.
