Assessing vegetation around barns and farm buildings

Focus the treatment conversation on appropriate exterior vegetation while making feed, animals, equipment and daily access clear.

By Wildfire Treatment Group.

Begin outside the building

When asking about wildfire pretreatment near a barn, identify the exterior vegetation you want considered. WTG’s ground-application service concerns suitable fuels within an agreed scope. The word barn does not automatically include spraying stored hay, feed, bedding, animals or the building’s interior. A clear distinction helps the review stay focused on the actual proposed work.

Explain how each side is used

One side may be a loading area, another a paddock entrance and another a natural vegetation edge. Mark those uses on a sketch or photographs. Include doors that must remain accessible and spaces used for vehicle turning or equipment staging. This information helps WTG understand where an application might be practical and where exclusions or further review are needed.

Make storage and water locations visible

Tell us about troughs, feed bins, hay stacks, fuel storage and drainage features near the proposed areas. Avoid relying on a distant aerial image to identify them. The person responsible for the barn can explain which items are permanent and what changes through the season. Product-specific directions and the agreed application plan should guide site-use arrangements.

Connect the visit to other work

Coordinate mowing, cleanup or contractor activity that could affect the proposed vegetation. Confirm who handles preparation and whether it will be complete before the visit. If daily operations change unexpectedly, let WTG know before the crew arrives. Clear communication makes it easier to reassess access or timing rather than work around assumptions.

Keep the scope useful after application

The completion record should identify the exterior areas included and any relevant changes to the proposal. Share it with the barn manager so later maintenance can be discussed accurately. Pretreatment does not establish that the building or its contents are fireproof. Animal emergency arrangements and building fire-safety work remain separate parts of caring for the property.
